From rivers to coastline to ponds to lakes (Texas has over 7,000 lakes and reservoirs), it\u2019s just not a Texas summer day if you don\u2019t spend some of it on a boat. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But, before you pack your cooler full of snacks, stock up on your sunscreen, and head out on the water, you must make sure your boat is registered and legal to take out. All motorized vessels, regardless of length (including sailboats with an auxiliary engine), as well as all non-motorized vessels (including sailboats) 14 feet or longer, must be registered. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Vessels already documented with the U.S. Coast Guard must also be registered to go out on the water in Texas.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No matter where you are on Texas waters, you are required to have up-to-date registration. This includes any boats and vessels that are docked or moored.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><strong>What Boats Are Exempt?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If your vessel fits one of these categories, it <em>does not<\/em> need to be registered with the Texas Parks &amp; Wildlife Department.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Your vessel is a non-motorized canoe, kayak, punt, rowboat, or rubber raft.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Your vessel is under 14 feet in length and non-motorized.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Your vessel is documented by the Coast Guard and used as a coastal shipping vessel.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Your vessel exceeds 115 feet in length.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2><strong>How Do I Register My Boat in the State of Texas?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Boat registration in Texas requires the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>A <a href=\"https:\/\/tpwd.texas.gov\/regulations\/outdoor-annual\/boating\/boating-references-tools-forms\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">completed application<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Required application fees<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019ll submit your required paperwork to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Texas Parks and Wildlife Headquarters in Austin<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Any Texas Parks and Wildlife Law Enforcement office in the state<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Your local Tax Assessor-Collector Office<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>To register your boat, you will be required to present a current photo ID. By accompanying your seller to the TPWD office, both of you can ensure the transfer of ownership and liability. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your seller must also notify TPWD of the boat transfer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2><strong>What Else Do I Need to Know About Boat Registration in Texas?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Your registration is valid for two years.
