If you\u2019re spending your time going back and forth to the cottage, sightseeing, or leisurely fishing, you\u2019re probably operating a pleasure craft. And, if your boat has a motor of 7.5 kW (10 horsepower) or more, you\u2019ll <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/tc.canada.ca\/en\/marine-transportation\/vessel-licensing-registration\/licensing-pleasure-craft\/apply-manage-pleasure-craft-licence-pcl\/apply-manage-pleasure-craft-licence-pcl#obtain\" target=\"_blank\">need to license it<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, in Canada, boat <em>registration<\/em> is most likely not something you\u2019ll need to deal with. <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/tc.canada.ca\/en\/marine-transportation\/vessel-licensing-registration\" target=\"_blank\">Registration is required<\/a> for government-owned vessels, commercial vessels, commercial river rafts, barges, vessels with a marine mortgage, and vessels traveling outside of Canada. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pleasure (recreational) crafts do not need to registered \u2014just licenced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><strong>Are Any Boats Exempt from Boat Registration in Alberta?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Almost all pleasure crafts in Alberta are required to be properly licenced with a Pleasure Craft Licence, though there are some exceptions to this requirement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your boat is likely exempt if: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>It has a motor of less than 10 horsepower (7.5 kW)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It&#8217;s already registered with Transport Canada<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You&#8217;ve purchased it within the past 90 days <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This last point is a 90-day grace period where you are not required to have a licence for your boat. You can also complete the application electronically. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You&#8217;ll need the following documents to license a pleasure craft:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>A signed photocopy of the valid government-issued identification for the owner (or owners)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The completed application<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Proof of ownership or a copy of the bill of sale. However, you&#8217;ll face a $250 fee if your vessel is caught operating without a licence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2><strong>How Do I Transfer Ownership To My New Boat?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>To transfer ownership to a boat you&#8217;ve recently bought, complete the application for a Pleasure Craft Licence. It must be on both sides of the boat\u2019s bow, in a contrasting color from the boat&#8217;s color, and at least 7.5 centimetres (or three inches) high. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You must always carry the Pleasure Craft Licence on the boat.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, your boat&#8217;s licence is valid for ten years (if it was issued after 2010).
