Study Guide Glossary:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.boatsmartexam.com\/knowledge-base\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/02\/Scene2BoatsLineup-011.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1346\" data-original=\"http:\/\/www.boatsmartexam.com\/knowledge-base\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/02\/Scene2BoatsLineup-011-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" data-original-set=\"https:\/\/www.boatsmartexam.com\/knowledge-base\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/02\/Scene2BoatsLineup-011-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.boatsmartexam.com\/knowledge-base\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/02\/Scene2BoatsLineup-011-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.boatsmartexam.com\/knowledge-base\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/02\/Scene2BoatsLineup-011.jpg 1500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Abaft:<\/strong> The direction towards the stern or near the back of the pleasure craft.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Abreast:<\/strong> Side by side; by the side of the craft.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Adrift:<\/strong> Loose, not on moorings or towline.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Aft:<\/strong> Towards the rear of the pleasure craft.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Aground:<\/strong> Touching or fast to the waterway bottom.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ahead:<\/strong> The direction in front of the bow of the pleasure craft.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Amid ship:<\/strong> In or toward the centre of the boat.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Anchor swivel:<\/strong> The connector between the anchor and the anchor line<\/p>\n<p><strong>Beam:<\/strong> The width of a boat at its widest point.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bilge:<\/strong> The lowest point on a boat.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bow:<\/strong> The forward or front part of a boat.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bow-eye:<\/strong> The part that the trailer winch hooks to on the boat.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Channel:<\/strong> A length of water wider than a strait that joins two larger areas of water.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Circle of death:<\/strong> This is the scenario in which a boat operator falls overboard while the engine is still running. The boat then circles back and hits the operator.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Coupler:<\/strong> A mechanism that is bolted or welded onto the end of a trailer tongue.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Double bottom:<\/strong> A compartment some boats have between the floor and hull of the boat, for safety.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Draft:<\/strong> The distance from the waterline to the lowest point of the hull.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Flame-tight:<\/strong> Secured tightly so as to be resistant to flame and preventive of explosion.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Freeboard:<\/strong> The height of a ship&#8217;s side between the waterline and the deck.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gas separator:<\/strong> A device that removes water and solid contaminants from the fuel before it reaches the fuel pump.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ground tackle:<\/strong> All of the anchor equipment including the anchor, the anchor line and the rode.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Grounded:<\/strong> Firmly planted on the ground, as a portable gas tank.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Hitch:<\/strong> Also called a tow-hitch or tow-bar, a device attached to the frame of a vehicle for towing a boat.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Inboard end:<\/strong> The end of the anchor line that is attached to the boat.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Intake grate:<\/strong> The suction area on the bottom of a PWC.<\/p>\n<p><strong>International waters:<\/strong> Oceans, seas, and waters outside of national jurisdiction.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jet thrust nozzle:<\/strong> The <a href=\"http:\/\/the-basic-parts-of-a-boat\" data-wplink-url-error=\"true\">part of a PWC<\/a> through which water is forced to create propulsion.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jetty:<\/strong> A narrow piece of land that extends into a waterway.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Lateral stability:<\/strong> The ability of a PWC to stay upright and not tilt sideways when crossing a wake.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mainsail:<\/strong> The principal sail on a sailboat.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Non-pyrotechnic:<\/strong> Visual <a href=\"http:\/\/distress-signals\" data-wplink-url-error=\"true\">distress signals<\/a> that do not ignite, such as hand signals or code flags.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Outboard end:<\/strong> The end of the anchor line that is attached to the anchor.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Outdrive:<\/strong> A power unit and attached propeller mounted at the stern of a boat, outside the hull.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Propulsion system:<\/strong> The source of power of a PWC, which is created by water being sucked in and propelled out.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pyrotechnic:<\/strong> Igniting, as in visual distress signals that provide lighted visibility.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rapids:<\/strong> A white-water area that is unsafe for boaters and especially unsafe for paddle crafts.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rode:<\/strong> The line or chain attached to the anchor and secured to the boat.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rudder:<\/strong> A device used to steer a boat. It may be either outboard or inboard. Outboard rudders are hung on the stern or transom.
