Here are our top tips to get you out boating safely and with confidence:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>All passengers should be seated properly with their hands and feet inside the boat.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li>For boats equipped with enclosed engine compartments, operate the ventilation system (blower) for at least four minutes before starting the engine.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li>Start the engine<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"\/EN\/secure\/studyguide\/glossary.cfm\/indexP\">PWC<\/a> operators should ensure the engine\u2019s kill switch (safety lanyard) is securely attached to their wrist or <a title=\"Lifejackets &amp; PFDs\" href=\"\/article\/lifejackets-pfds\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">PFD<\/a> at all times.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol start=\"4\">\n<li>Check your surroundings for any obstacles or other boats.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol start=\"5\">\n<li>Untie all <a href=\"\/EN\/secure\/studyguide\/glossary.cfm\/indexM\">mooring lines<\/a> and push the boat away from the dock:<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>As you leave the dock, the stern of your boat will likely swing back towards the dock\u2013push your boat well clear of the dock at both the bow and stern<\/li>\n<li>Be careful if the wind is pushing your boat towards shore\u2013you may need to operate in reverse, angling the stern away from the dock before pulling away, to avoid a potential collision with the dock<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol start=\"6\">\n<li>Proceed slowly from the dock until it is safe to increase your speed.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol start=\"7\">\n<li>Fast acceleration may cause passengers to lose their balance.
