{"id":757,"date":"2015-04-29T09:19:46","date_gmt":"2015-04-29T13:19:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.boatsmartexam.com\/?post_type=article&#038;p=757"},"modified":"2020-03-26T20:11:51","modified_gmt":"2020-03-26T20:11:51","slug":"how-to-get-an-oregon-boat-license","status":"publish","type":"article","link":"https:\/\/www.boatsmartexam.com\/knowledge-base\/article\/how-to-get-an-oregon-boat-license\/","title":{"rendered":"How to get an Oregon Boat License"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Who needs an Oregon Boat License?<\/h2>\n<p>Oregon&#8217;s Mandatory Boater Education law requires that any person operating a boat of 10 horsepower or more, including personal watercraft (PWCs), complete a course on basic boating skills and\/or pass a test to demonstrate basic boating knowledge.<\/p>\n<p>After the test has been completed, the operator must apply for a Boater Education Card, commonly called an Oregon boat license. This card must be carried on board the boat during operation.<\/p>\n<p><b>Exemptions:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A non-resident who will be operating on Oregon waters for less than 60 days, or who has a Boater Education Card issued by another state.<\/li>\n<li>A person who has a current <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uscg.mil\/\">Coast Guard<\/a> Boat Operator&#8217;s License.<\/li>\n<li>A commercial fisherman who has obtained a current commercial fishing license (these operators must carry their commercial license or documentation on board with them when operating recreationally).<\/li>\n<li>Non-certified adults under supervision\u2014an adult can operate a powerboat without a Boater Education Card, so long as they are directly supervised by a person 16 years of age or older who has obtained their card (the supervisor must be 18 years of age or older to supervise on a personal watercraft).<\/li>\n<li>A person who has recently purchased a boat and has in their possession a temporary Certificate of Number (only valid for 60 days).<\/li>\n<li>A person who is renting a boat and has completed a watercraft rental safety checklist.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Boat Rental in Oregon<\/h2>\n<p>In order to rent and operate a boat or personal watercraft (PWC), you are required to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Have obtained and be carrying on board, an Oregon Boater Education Card;<\/li>\n<li>Or, have completed and be carrying on board, a Watercraft Rental Safety Checklist.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Note: It is illegal for any person under the age of 18 to rent a PWC.<strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>Oregon&#8217;s Age and Horsepower Restrictions:<\/h2>\n<p>In Oregon, children under 12 years of age are not permitted to operate a motorized boat.<\/p>\n<p>Children between 12-15 years of age may:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Operate a motorized boat of 10 horsepower or less so long as they have obtained and are carrying their Boater Education Card during boat operation.<\/li>\n<li>Operate a motorized boat of more than 10 horsepower so long as they have obtained and are carrying their Boater Education Card during boat operation and they are being supervised by a person 16 years of age or older who has also obtained a Boater Education Card.<\/li>\n<li>Note:If the motorized boat of 10 horsepower or less is a PWC, the supervisor must be 18 years of age or older in order to supervise.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For more information on Oregon boat license requirements, visit the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oregon.gov\/osmb\/boater-info\/Pages\/Boater-Education-Cards.aspx\">Oregon State Marine Board<\/a> website.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":4,"featured_media":0,"menu_order":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","template":"","format":"standard","article-category":[7],"article-tag":[247,272,15,29,37,38],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v14.2 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/wordpress\/plugins\/seo\/ -->\n<title>Oregon Boat License and Boater Education Requirements<\/title>\n<meta name=\"description\" content=\"Who needs an Oregon Boat License, and how to get one.
