Violation example: A boat operator that is pulling and watching a waterskier, rather than the water ahead, would be in violation of this law.<\/p>\n<h2>Especially Hazardous Conditions<\/h2>\n<p>If peace officers observe a boat being operated in an especially hazardous condition, they may order the operator to move to the nearest safe moorage and remain there until the condition is remedied. Examples of especially hazardous conditions include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/boat-capacity-and-horsepower-recommendations\" data-wplink-url-error=\"true\">Overloading<\/a> or overpowering.<\/li>\n<li>Leakage of fuel from the boat engine, fuel system or fuel in the bilge.<\/li>\n<li>Riding on a motorized boat\u2019s bow, deck or gunwale at a speed exceeding 5 mph, unless the boat has adequate guards or railings (standing on bow decking is allowed for mooring or casting off).<\/li>\n<li>Improper or insufficient:\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/life-jacket-laws-in-oregon\" data-wplink-url-error=\"true\">Lifejackets<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Fire extinguishers.<\/li>\n<li>Backfire arresting devices on carburetors.<\/li>\n<li>Navigation lights between sunset and sunrise.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Boat Speed Limits and Operation in Restricted Areas<\/h2>\n<p><b>Speed Limits<\/b><\/p>\n<p>It is illegal to operate a boat at a rate of speed greater than that which will permit the operator to exercise reasonable care to bring the boat to a stop within the assured clearing distance ahead.<\/p>\n<p>Boat operators must observe a \u2018Slow &#8211; No Wake\u2019 (maximum 5 mph speed limit) when within 200 feet of:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A boat ramp, marina or moorage with a capacity for six or more boats;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>A floating home moorage with six or more structures, or;<\/li>\n<li>People working at water level.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Operators may be liable for any damage caused by their wake. This rule does not apply to commercial boats or river navigation when more speed is needed to ensure safe passage.<\/p>\n<h2>Restricted Areas<\/h2>\n<p>Many waterways in Oregon have special boating restriction regulations depending on the type and size of waterway, such as \u2018No-Wake\u2019 zones and speed restrictions.
