Boats less than 16 feet in length which are operated on the Great Lakes or connecting waterways are required to carry at least one Type I, II or III life jacket for each person.<\/p>\n<p>Vessels 16 feet in length or greater are also required to carry one Type IV PFD on board. Canoes and kayaks greater than 16 ft. in length are exempt from this requirement.<\/p>\n<h2>Children\u2019s Life Jacket Law<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.boatsmartexam.com\/knowledge-base\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/04\/LifeJAcketLawsFrChildren11-e1443550710423.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-728\" data-original=\"https:\/\/www.boatsmartexam.com\/knowledge-base\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/04\/LifeJAcketLawsFrChildren11-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"Illustration of a children's life jacket\" width=\"579\" height=\"326\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In Michigan, boat passengers 6 years of age and under are required to wear a Coast Guard-approved, Type I or Type II life jacket when on the open deck of any boat, while the boat is underway.<\/p>\n<h2>Personal Watercraft (PWC) Life Jacket Law<\/h2>\n<p>Michigan&#8217;s life jacket laws for PWC&#8217;s require any person operating or riding on a PWC is required to wear a Coast Guard-approved, Type I, II or III life jacket. Inflatable life jackets are not permitted.<\/p>\n<h2>Towed Sports Law<\/h2>\n<p>Any person being towed behind any boat is required to wear a Coast Guard-approved, Type I, II or III life jacket.
