Violations are punishable by a fine of $2,500 and 6 months in jail. Additionally, the Coast Guard may impose a civil penalty of up to $5,000 and imprisonment of 1 year. Reckless boat operation is defined as any act which endangers life, limb or property.<\/p>\n<p>Examples of Tennessee&#8217;s reckless boat operation violations may include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Operating a boat in a designated swimming area.<\/li>\n<li>Allowing passengers to sit on seatbacks, gunwales, transoms or pedestal seats while travelling faster than idle speed.<\/li>\n<li>Excessive speed in crowded areas, dangerous areas or during restricted visibility.<\/li>\n<li>Operating an overloaded boat.<\/li>\n<li>Towing a skier in a crowded area where a fallen skier is likely to be hit by other boats or towing in areas where the skier is likely to strike an obstacle.<\/li>\n<li>Using a personal \u00a0watercraft (PWC) to jump the immediate wake of another boat.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Boat Owner Responsibility<\/h2>\n<p>Boat owners may be responsible for any injury or damage done by their boat, including damage caused by the boat&#8217;s wake. This shall not hold true if the boat is used without the owner&#8217;s consent. There may be civil liability charges attached to any damage caused by the wake of a boat.<\/p>\n<h2>Boat Speed Limits<\/h2>\n<p>In Tennessee it is illegal to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Operate a boat within 300 feet of a commercial boat dock at greater than idle speed regardless of whether or not the area is marked by buoys.<\/li>\n<li>Operate at an excessive rate of speed in crowded or dangerous areas or during periods of restricted visibility.<\/li>\n<li>Jump another boat\u2019s wake within 100 feet of that boat.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Operation in Restricted Areas<\/h2>\n<p>Tennessee Wildlife and Resource Agency Access areas have the following restrictions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Disorderly conduct or the use of intoxicants or other behavior-modifying substances is prohibited.<\/li>\n<li>The use of firearms is prohibited (except during regular hunting season).<\/li>\n<li>Target shooting is prohibited at all times.<\/li>\n<li>Swimming from or near ramps or in such a manner as to interfere with the launching or removal of boats is prohibited.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For more information on boating rules and regulations visit the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tn.gov\/twra\/boating\/boating-education.html\">Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency<\/a> webiste.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":4,"featured_media":0,"menu_order":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","template":"","format":"standard","article-category":[10],"article-tag":[170,181,247,267,151],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v14.2 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/wordpress\/plugins\/seo\/ -->\n<title>Tennessee&#039;s Reckless Boat Operation Regulations<\/title>\n<meta name=\"description\" content=\"Learn about Tennessee&#039;s reckless boat operation regulations and violations.
