While we all want to have fun and enjoy a day on the water, sharing the waterways with others means <a title=\"Sharing Canada's Waterways\" href=\"\/article\/sharing-canadas-waterways\/\">operating in a safe and courteous manner<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/03\/SafetyUnderwayHeroHeroScaled1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-250\" data-original=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/03\/SafetyUnderwayHeroHeroScaled1-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"Safety Underway\" width=\"700\" height=\"394\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Safety underway means:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Understanding and taking into account the\u00a0effects of being on the water<\/li>\n<li>Choosing a\u00a0safe and appropriate speed<\/li>\n<li>Knowing the proper techniques for\u00a0reducing risk while operating at high speeds<\/li>\n<li>Knowing how to operate safely\u00a0amongst other boat traffic during the day or night and sharing the waterways with others<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Effects of Being on the Water<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/fast.wistia.net\/embed\/iframe\/xf0h0apiys?dnt=1&#038;popover=true\" class=\"wistia-popover[height=393,playerColor=7b796a,width=699]\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/embed-ssl.wistia.com\/deliveries\/39787a3460254b071776d3e57631d7d6beb05d1c.jpg?image_play_button=true&#038;image_play_button_color=7b796ae0&#038;image_crop_resized=600x338\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><script charset=\"ISO-8859-1\" src=\"\/\/fast.wistia.com\/assets\/external\/popover-v1.js\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>You should remember that certain\u00a0effects of being on the water can impair your judgment\u00a0and ability to operate your craft safely. These effects include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The motion of your pleasure craft<\/li>\n<li>Sunlight<\/li>\n<li>Wind<\/li>\n<li>Waves<\/li>\n<li>Sound<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/03\/EffectOfBeingOnTheWaterHero-011.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-251\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/03\/EffectOfBeingOnTheWaterHero-011-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"Staying Hydrated while Boating\" width=\"700\" height=\"394\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>These effects (individually or in combination with each other) may impair your balance, sense of coordination, reflexes, response time, eyesight, hearing and judgment. If you find that any of your senses are impaired you should immediately seek a safe harbour and shade yourself from direct sunlight.<\/p>\n<p>Be aware of the effects of being on the water\u2013both on yourself and on your passengers. Take steps to reduce these effects by ensuring that you wear appropriate protection from the elements including sunglasses, sunscreen and a visor or hat.<\/p>\n<p>Be well rested when planning to operate your craft for extended periods and ensure that you consume ample liquids (such as water or juice) to keep hydrated. You should <a title=\"Boating and Alcohol\" href=\"\/article\/alcohol-and-boating\/\">never consume alcohol or controlled substances<\/a> when operating a pleasure craft.<\/p>\n<h2>Heat Exhaustion<\/h2>\n<p>Heat exhaustion (or heat stroke) results from an abnormally elevated body temperature with accompanying physical and neurological symptoms. Heat exhaustion is a true medical emergency that can be fatal if not properly and promptly treated. Symptoms include nausea, vomiting, fatigue, weakness, headache, muscle cramps and dizziness.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/03\/HeatExhaustionHeroScaled1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-253\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/03\/HeatExhaustionHeroScaled1-1024x512.jpg\" alt=\"Boater with Heat Ehxaustion\" width=\"700\" height=\"350\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Victims of heat exhaustion must receive immediate treatment to avoid permanent organ damage. First and foremost, cool the victim. Remove clothing, apply cool water to the skin and fan the victim to promote sweating and evaporation.
