{"id":834,"date":"2015-03-31T10:50:55","date_gmt":"2015-03-31T14:50:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.boatsmartexam.com\/?post_type=article&#038;p=264"},"modified":"2020-04-02T12:41:23","modified_gmt":"2020-04-02T12:41:23","slug":"anchoring-your-boat","status":"publish","type":"article","link":"https:\/\/www.boatsmartexam.com\/knowledge-base\/article\/anchoring-your-boat\/","title":{"rendered":"Anchoring your Boat"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>How to Anchor your Boat<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/fast.wistia.net\/embed\/iframe\/uvymk5e1nl?dnt=1&#038;popover=true\" class=\"wistia-popover[height=393,playerColor=7b796a,width=699]\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-original=\"https:\/\/embed-ssl.wistia.com\/deliveries\/53d425be88fb84895e3c4f56ac3292b43f919623.jpg?image_play_button=true&#038;image_play_button_color=7b796ae0&#038;image_crop_resized=600x338\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><script charset=\"ISO-8859-1\" src=\"\/\/fast.wistia.com\/assets\/external\/popover-v1.js\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"line-height: 1.5\">Anchors have several uses:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In the event of a breakdown<\/li>\n<li>During severe weather conditions<\/li>\n<li>An anchor is also useful in non-emergency situations (such as when swimming from the stern or securing for an overnight stay)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Step 1) Ensure the&nbsp;inboard end&nbsp;of the&nbsp;anchor line&nbsp;is securely attached&nbsp;to the pleasure craft. Ensure the&nbsp;outboard end&nbsp;of the&nbsp;anchor line&nbsp;is securely fastened&nbsp;to the anchor.<\/p>\n<p>Step 2) Slowly lower the anchor over the&nbsp;bow&nbsp;or side of the craft until it reaches bottom. Note the&nbsp;distance to the bottom or note the length of rope used for the anchor to reach bottom and never throw the anchor over the side of the boat.<\/p>\n<p>Step 3) Let the boat drift rearward or operate the engine&nbsp;astern&nbsp;(in reverse). Let out an additional 5-10 times more&nbsp;anchor line&nbsp;than the depth of the water and securely fasten the desired length to the boat.<\/p>\n<p>Step 4) At only 2x and 4x depth, the anchor can dig in but there is too much upward pull on the anchor line (rode). At a length of 5 to 10 times the water\u2019s depth, the rope lies flat on the bottom and pulls the anchor in deeper.<\/p>\n<h2>Anchoring Tips<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/03\/AnchoringYrCrftHeroHeroScaled1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-265\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/03\/AnchoringYrCrftHeroHeroScaled1-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"Anchoring a boat based on the water depth\" width=\"700\" height=\"394\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Choosing landmarks:<\/strong> Once the anchor is set choose two fixed landmarks on the horizon and occasionally check your relative position, to ensure that you are not drifting.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Swing:<\/strong> Never secure the anchor to the stern of the craft. If the wind changes direction, your boat will swing with the stern into the wind. <a title=\"Swamping or Sinking\" href=\"\/article\/swamping-or-sinking\/\">Smaller boats can be easily swamped<\/a> by waves crashing over the transom.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Right of swing:<\/strong> If you are preparing to set anchor in an anchorage among other boats, remember that the first craft into anchorage has the&nbsp;\u2018right of swing\u2019. Other boats may \u2018swing\u2019 with changes in wind direction.
