You should be prepared with the right knowledge and equipment to rescue a person overboard:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Ensure that your emergency equipment is\u00a0properly maintained and\u00a0readily accessible<\/li>\n<li>Practice overboard rescue techniques with your passengers and make them aware of their responsibilities<\/li>\n<li>Practice\u00a0manoeuvring your pleasure craft to\u00a0properly position your boat\u00a0so that you\u2019re ready to perform an overboard rescue if an emergency arises<\/li>\n<li>Be able to keep in mind the water surface and weather conditions, as well as the condition of the person during a the rescue<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Rescuing a Person Overboard<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/fast.wistia.net\/embed\/iframe\/wimps9skrp?dnt=1&#038;popover=true\" class=\"wistia-popover[height=393,playerColor=7b796a,width=699]\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/embed-ssl.wistia.com\/deliveries\/f9695e1c25e72fc465e38ade5ef5ae1042edc71f.jpg?image_play_button=true&#038;image_play_button_color=7b796ae0&#038;image_crop_resized=600x338\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><script charset=\"ISO-8859-1\" src=\"\/\/fast.wistia.com\/assets\/external\/popover-v1.js\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Your first action should be to immediately reduce your speed and prepare to turn around. To rescue the person overboard, perform the following:<\/p>\n<p>Step 1) Immediately <a title=\"BOATsmart! Marine Rescue Throw Bag\" href=\"http:\/\/www.boatsmartmarine.com\/collections\/retail\/products\/rescue-throw-bag\">throw the person a brightly-coloured, buoyant item<\/a> such as a life ring or <a title=\"Lifejackets and Personal Flotation Devices\" href=\"\/article\/lifejackets-pfds\/\">life jacket<\/a>\u2013this will keep them afloat, increase their visibility in the water and mark their position.<\/p>\n<p>Step 2) Assign another passenger to keep a lookout of the person overboard and continuously point to the overboard person\u2019s location in the water.<\/p>\n<p>Step 3) Carefully manoeuvre the boat turning the bow into the wind and in a downwind position from the victim\u2013you want the person to drift towards the boat.<\/p>\n<p>Step 4) Once in rescue position, shut down the engine to avoid accidental movement and injury (such as a propeller strike).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Use one of the following overboard rescue techniques to recover the victim:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/03\/RescueProcedureHeroScaled1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-333\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/03\/RescueProcedureHeroScaled1.jpg\" alt=\"Using a buoyant heaving line to rescue a person overboard\" width=\"700\" height=\"394\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>1. Use a reaching assist:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Move to the side of the boat and keep your weight low<\/li>\n<li>Use the reaching assist to pull the victim to the side of the boat and assist them back into the boat<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>2. Use a <a title=\"BOATsmart! Marine Rescue Throw Line\" href=\"http:\/\/www.boatsmartmarine.com\/collections\/retail\/products\/rescue-throw-line\">buoyant heaving line<\/a>:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Throw the buoyant heaving line so that it lands behind the victim<\/li>\n<li>Slowly pull the line towards you so the victim can grab onto it<\/li>\n<li>Pull the victim to the side of the boat and assist them back into the boat<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>3. Use a life ring:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Ensure the life ring is secured to the boat with a line<\/li>\n<li>Throw the life ring so that it lands behind the victim<\/li>\n<li>Slowly pull the line towards you so the victim is able to grab onto it<\/li>\n<li>Pull the victim to the side of the boat and assist them back into the boat<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Safe Boating Tip<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Never jump into the water to rescue the person overboard because if they are panicking and thrashing in the water, they could pull you under.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":4,"featured_media":0,"menu_order":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","template":"","format":"standard","article-category":[13],"article-tag":[112,161,162,165,45],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v14.2 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/wordpress\/plugins\/seo\/ -->\n<title>Person Overboard Emergency Procedures | BOATsmart!<\/title>\n<meta name=\"description\" content=\"An overview of how to respond in the event of a person overboard emergency.
