By <a title=\"Maintaining your Boat\" href=\"\/article\/maintaining-your-boat\/\">regularly maintaining and inspecting<\/a> your vessel, you\u2019ll reduce the risk of an unexpected breakdown or mechanical failure.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/03\/BreakdownNMechanicalFailure2HeroScaled1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-348\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/03\/BreakdownNMechanicalFailure2HeroScaled1-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"Boat operator broken down on the water with mechanical failure\" width=\"700\" height=\"394\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>If your craft has broken down or is inoperable due to mechanical failure:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 1)<\/strong> <a title=\"Anchoring your Boat\" href=\"\/article\/anchoring-your-boat\/\">Use an anchor to secure your craft<\/a>, if necessary. If you are in a high traffic area use a manual propelling device (such as a paddle or oars) to manoeuvre your craft to a safe area before anchoring. If you have lost all power and are drifting towards significant danger, set your anchor immediately.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 2)<\/strong> Investigate the cause of the breakdown or failure.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 3)<\/strong> If possible, correct the problem.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 4)<\/strong> If necessary, signal your need for assistance using a recognized distress signal.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Remember: <\/strong><br \/>\nYou should always carry a tool kit including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Spare bulbs (appropriate for your craft)<\/li>\n<li>Spare fuses<\/li>\n<li>Grease, penetrating oil and rags<\/li>\n<li>Spare oil (4-Stroke or 2-Stroke depending on your type of engine)<\/li>\n<li>Spare safety lanyard (PWC operators)<\/li>\n<li>Spare spark plugs (appropriate for your engine)<\/li>\n<li>Basic toolset<\/li>\n<li>Common nuts and bolts<\/li>\n<li>Tie straps and duct tape<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Carbon Monoxide<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/fast.wistia.net\/embed\/iframe\/ft118wj4wh?dnt=1&#038;popover=true\" class=\"wistia-popover[height=393,playerColor=7b796a,width=699]\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/embed-ssl.wistia.com\/deliveries\/ddbb8375f4e7ef8fc3c34b0165312854a57ef53a.jpg?image_play_button=true&#038;image_play_button_color=7b796ae0&#038;image_crop_resized=600x338\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><script charset=\"ISO-8859-1\" src=\"\/\/fast.wistia.com\/assets\/external\/popover-v1.js\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Carbon Monoxide (CO) is a deadly gas you can\u2019t see, smell or taste. CO is produced by anything that burns carbon-based fuel (gasoline, propane, charcoal, oil, etc.), including engines, generators, cooking ranges and heaters. CO spreads evenly throughout an enclosed space and is undetectable. Be aware when swimming from a boat equipped with pontoons. CO build-up can occur between the pontoons of a houseboat or a pontoon boat.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-347\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/03\/CarbonMonoxideHeroScaled1-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"Fuel burning appliances on a boat can cause Co2 poisoning\" width=\"700\" height=\"394\" \/><\/p>\n<p>CO is inhaled into your lungs and cuts off the oxygen supply to your body, which can kill in minutes. Be alert to flu-like symptoms, which can include headaches, nausea and fatigue.<\/p>\n<p>Operators of boats with fuel burning appliances, such as cooking ranges in houseboats, should be aware of the increased risks of CO poisoning.
