To steer the boat, you will move the entire boat engine and drive assembly. In order to avoid hitting bottom in shallow areas, you can move the engine up or down, manually or electronically.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/fast.wistia.net\/embed\/iframe\/udn90azlup?dnt=1&#038;popover=true\" class=\"wistia-popover[height=393,playerColor=7b796a,width=699]\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-original=\"https:\/\/embed-ssl.wistia.com\/deliveries\/f483ca4e40b1036bf649d7efa94f407efe8e4226.jpg?image_play_button=true&#038;image_play_button_color=7b796ae0&#038;image_crop_resized=600x338\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><script charset=\"ISO-8859-1\" src=\"\/\/fast.wistia.com\/assets\/external\/popover-v1.js\"><\/script><\/p>\n<h2>Sterndrive<\/h2>\n<p>If your boat has a \u2018sterndrive\u2019 (or inboard\/outboard) it will be mounted within the <a title=\"Boat Hull Types\" href=\"\/article\/boat-hull-types\/\">hull of the boat<\/a>. However, the lower unit of the engine (the propeller and drive assembly) will be mounted on the transom at the stern of the boat. Many powerboats have this \u2018hybrid\u2019 type because it combines inboard power with outboard drive.<\/p>\n<h2>Inboard<\/h2>\n<p>If your boat has an \u2018inboard engine\u2019, the motor and most of the drive assembly will be mounted within the <a title=\"Boat Hull Types\" href=\"\/article\/boat-hull-types\/\">hull of the boat<\/a>. This means that only the propeller and propeller shaft will be located outside of the hull.
