Make sure that you <a href=\"http:\/\/using-a-trip-plan\" data-wplink-url-error=\"true\">plan your trip<\/a> requirements and carry enough fuel to get you there\u2026 and back without any trouble.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/04\/Scene1RunningOnEmpty-011.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-581\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/04\/Scene1RunningOnEmpty-011-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"Scene4Supervision\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Use the \u2018rule of thirds\u2019 when considering the amount of fuel that\u2019s required for your trip:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>One-third (1\/3) to go out.<\/li>\n<li>One-third (1\/3) to get back.<\/li>\n<li>One-third (1\/3) held in reserve.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Safety When Fueling a Boat:<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/fast.wistia.net\/embed\/iframe\/udzpy3uof5?dnt=1&#038;popover=true\" class=\"wistia-popover[height=393,playerColor=7b796a,width=699]\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/embed-ssl.wistia.com\/deliveries\/74bfb10519a65df5f806d4e30dc5ae259f64bc46.jpg?image_play_button=true&#038;image_play_button_color=7b796ae0&#038;image_crop_resized=600x338\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><script charset=\"ISO-8859-1\" src=\"\/\/fast.wistia.com\/assets\/external\/popover-v1.js\"><\/script><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Never overfill your tank or spill fuel\u2014spilling fuel into the engine or passenger compartment can increase the <a href=\"\/article\/fighting-a-boat-fire\/\">risk of explosion or fire<\/a>, and spilling fuel into the water will harm the <a href=\"\/article\/protecting-the-marine-environment\/\">marine environment<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Never smoke while you fuel a boat.<\/li>\n<li>Refuel during daylight hours when an artificial light source is not needed (the electrical current from the artificial light source can cause a fire).<\/li>\n<li>Refuel portable tanks on shore\u2014never on the boat.<\/li>\n<li>Ask your passengers to exit the boat until you\u2019re finished fueling, for their safety.<\/li>\n<li>Never use ethanol to fuel a boat \u2014it can cause your equipment to malfunction.<\/li>\n<li>After fueling, open any ports, hatches and doors to ventilate fumes that may have entered your boat during the fueling process.<\/li>\n<li>If your boat has an inboard engine, you should <a href=\"\/article\/usa-back-fire-flame-control-devices-and-ventilation-systems\/\">always run the blower for at least four minutes<\/a> before starting the engine.<\/li>\n<li>Perform the &#8216;sniff test&#8217; to check your bilges\u2014make sure you don\u2019t smell gasoline.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/04\/SafetyPrecautionsWhenFuellng3.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-582\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/04\/SafetyPrecautionsWhenFuellng3-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"Print\" width=\"700\" height=\"394\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Remember:<\/strong> Gasoline is highly explosive when mixed with air and when boat fires DO happen, it\u2019s usually during or shortly after fueling. This will ensure the pump is grounded and will reduce the risk of ignition due to static electricity.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 10)<\/strong> Never overfill the fuel tank.
