The document should be given to a responsible person on shore. In the event that you do not return from your trip on time, a trip plan can be used by search and rescue organizations to help pinpoint your whereabouts.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/03\/ScaledPreparingATripPlan-0Hero1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-239\" data-original=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/03\/ScaledPreparingATripPlan-0Hero1-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"Family of boaters talking about their trip plan\" width=\"700\" height=\"394\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Safe Boating Tip<br \/>\n<\/strong>Your plan document should always be left with a responsible person who knows what to do in case of emergency. Even for a short boating trip, you should let a responsible person know where you will be boating, when you are expected to arrive home and the distinguishing features of your boat.<\/p>\n<h2>Preparing your Plan<\/h2>\n<p><strong>A trip plan should include:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The name of your pleasure craft<\/li>\n<li>License number of your pleasure craft<\/li>\n<li>Type of craft (power or sail)<\/li>\n<li>Size and colour of your pleasure craft<\/li>\n<li>Type of engine<\/li>\n<li>Distinguishing features of the pleasure craft<\/li>\n<li>Your name, address and telephone number<\/li>\n<li>Number of persons onboard<\/li>\n<li>Trip description including:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Time of departure<\/li>\n<li>Time of return<\/li>\n<li>Proposed route<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Type of radiophone and channel monitored (if so equipped)<\/li>\n<li>List of safety equipment onboard including flares, life jackets, PFDs and life rafts<\/li>\n<li>Instructions in case of emergency<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/03\/ScaledWhatISATripPlanHero1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-240\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/03\/ScaledWhatISATripPlanHero1-791x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Trip Plan\" width=\"700\" height=\"906\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Filing your Plan<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/03\/FilingATripPlanHeroScaled1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-241\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/03\/FilingATripPlanHeroScaled1-1024x550.jpg\" alt=\"Filing a Trip Plan\" width=\"702\" height=\"377\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Where to File<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Your plan should be filed on shore with a responsible person, a marina or with the local Canadian Coast Guard detachment. The person you file your trip plan with should know what to do in case of emergency.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Changing a Trip Plan<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you change plans during your trip, you should notify the person with whom you\u2019ve filed the plan. Doing so will inform the person of your correct whereabouts and avoid a false alarm or unnecessary emergency actions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>On Return<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Upon your return, you must remember to notify the person or organization with whom you filed the plan and inform them that you have returned safely.
