Additionally, boats greater than 16 feet in length must also carry a readily accessible, Coast Guard-approved throwable device (i.e. a Type IV PFD).<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-716\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/04\/LifeJAcketLawsFrChildren11-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"Illustration of a child following Washington's Life Jacket laws, by wearing a properly fitted coast guard-approved life jacket. \" width=\"700\" height=\"394\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Life Jacket Laws for Children<\/h2>\n<p>In Washington, boat passengers 12 years of age and under are required to wear a Coast Guard-approved life jacket while aboard any boat that is less than 19 feet in length (unless the child is in a fully enclosed area, such as a cabin).<\/p>\n<h2>Requirements for Personal Watercraft (PWC)<\/h2>\n<p>Washington&#8217;s life jacket laws require any person aboard a PWC to wear a Coast Guard-approved, Type I, II or III life jacket.<\/p>\n<h2>Requirements for Towed Sports<\/h2>\n<p>Any person being towed by a boat is required to wear a Coast Guard-approved Type I, II or III life jacket.<\/p>\n<p>For more information on boating rules and regulations that apply within the state of Washington, visit the <a href=\"https:\/\/parks.state.wa.us\/442\/Mandatory-Boater-Education\">Washington State Parks Boating Program<\/a> website.
