As the boat operator, it\u2019s your responsibility to provide a life jacket for each of your passengers. Remember, there are fines for those who fail to carry the proper number and\/or type of life jackets for their passengers.<\/p>\n<h2>Coast Guard-Approved Life Jackets and Personal Flotation Devices<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/fast.wistia.net\/embed\/iframe\/bf7y8z5vi6?dnt=1&#038;popover=true\" class=\"wistia-popover[height=393,playerColor=7b796a,width=699]\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/embed-ssl.wistia.com\/deliveries\/4327c2ac996f8d96f200d12e4ab24f86f8f8a6a2.jpg?image_play_button=true&#038;image_play_button_color=7b796ae0&#038;image_crop_resized=600x338\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><script charset=\"ISO-8859-1\" src=\"\/\/fast.wistia.com\/assets\/external\/popover-v1.js\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>\u2018Coast Guard-approval\u2019 means that your equipment has met all of the regulations that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uscg.mil\/\">United States Coast Guard<\/a> has set in place. These very specific regulations relate to the equipment\u2019s performance, construction and materials.<\/p>\n<p>Even if your equipment has Coast Guard-approval, you will still need to ensure that it\u2019s undamaged and in good condition. Remember to maintain your life jackets often and replace them according to the manufacturer\u2019s instructions.<\/p>\n<p>It can\u2019t be stressed enough\u2014life jackets are important lifesaving tools that you should wear at all times when you\u2019re boating or near the water. Why? Because more than 90% of all the people who drown while boating were NOT wearing a life jacket. Fortunately, today\u2019s Coast Guard-approved life jackets come in a variety of styles that are comfortable to wear <em>and<\/em> they look great! So <em>WEAR IT<\/em>!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/04\/WhatIsACoastguardAprrvd1-011.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-410\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/04\/WhatIsACoastguardAprrvd1-011-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"USCG Approved Inflatable Life jacket\" width=\"700\" height=\"394\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Safe Boating Tip: <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Attach a waterproof safety light and whistle to all of your life jackets. This is not a requirement, but this equipment would be very helpful during a fall overboard emergency. Inherently buoyant flotation devices are very durable and come in a wide size range. Type I vests are designed to turn an unconscious wearer face-up in the water. However, the wearer may need to tilt their head back to avoid flipping face down.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/04\/Scene1-011.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-416\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/04\/Scene1-011-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"Type III Lifejackets - flotation aids\" width=\"700\" height=\"394\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Advantages:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>There are many style options available to choose from.<\/li>\n<li>They are comfortable to wear during towed sport or paddling activities.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong> Disadvantage:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Wearers may need to place themselves in a face-up position when in the water.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>The Type III life jackets available are:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Inherently Buoyant Type III life jackets.<\/li>\n<li>Inflatable Type III life jackets.<\/li>\n<li>Hybrid Type III life jackets.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Safe Boating Tip:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When in a smaller boat, other boaters may find it difficult to see you. To increase your visibility to other boaters, you should always wear a brightly colored life jacket.<\/p>\n<h2>Type IV: Throwable Device<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/fast.wistia.net\/embed\/iframe\/awdk7qypqy?dnt=1&#038;popover=true\" class=\"wistia-popover[height=393,playerColor=7b796a,width=699]\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/embed-ssl.wistia.com\/deliveries\/e1e688be4d7a7db5303c2b05e8ad70eb0f9b1701.jpg?image_play_button=true&#038;image_play_button_color=7b796ae0&#038;image_crop_resized=600x338\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><script charset=\"ISO-8859-1\" src=\"\/\/fast.wistia.com\/assets\/external\/popover-v1.js\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>This flotation device type is meant to be used anywhere that you\u2019re boating but is best used in calm waters where rescue is always available. These devices are meant to be <em>thrown<\/em> to people who have fallen overboard\u2014not <em>worn<\/em> by them. The person in the water must hold onto the Type IV device in order to stay afloat.<\/p>\n<p>The throwable device must be in good condition (no rips or tears) to be considered Coast Guard-approved. Additionally, the holding brackets for the throwable device should be designed to allow Type IV devices to float free from your boat if it\u2019s sinking!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/04\/Type41.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-417\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/04\/Type41-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"Life Ring\" width=\"700\" height=\"394\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Advantage: <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Throwable flotation devices may be easily thrown to a person in the water.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Disadvantage:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Throwable flotation devices are not designed to be worn and must be grasped by the person in the water until they can be rescued.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>The Type IV throwable devices available are:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Buoyant cushions.<\/li>\n<li>Life rings.<\/li>\n<li>Horseshoe buoys.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Note:<\/strong> If your boat is over 16 feet in length, federal law requires you to have one Type IV throwable device onboard, in addition to a life jacket for each person on the boat.<\/p>\n<h2>Type V: Special-Use Devices<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/fast.wistia.net\/embed\/iframe\/awdk7qypqy?dnt=1&#038;popover=true\" class=\"wistia-popover[height=393,playerColor=7b796a,width=699]\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/embed-ssl.wistia.com\/deliveries\/e1e688be4d7a7db5303c2b05e8ad70eb0f9b1701.jpg?image_play_button=true&#038;image_play_button_color=7b796ae0&#038;image_crop_resized=600x338\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><script charset=\"ISO-8859-1\" src=\"\/\/fast.wistia.com\/assets\/external\/popover-v1.js\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>These flotation devices are intended for particular water activities (such as a kayaking vest or a work vest). For example, will you be wakeboarding? Paddling? Fishing?<\/li>\n<li>Check the label to confirm that the life jacket has been Coast Guard-approved.<\/li>\n<li>Try it on and zip or buckle up!
