The Certificate of Number must be carried on board and be available for inspection by an enforcement officer during operation.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.boatsmartexam.com\/knowledge-base\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/04\/BoatRegistrationSplash11.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-737\" data-original=\"https:\/\/www.boatsmartexam.com\/knowledge-base\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/04\/BoatRegistrationSplash11-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"Illustration of a registered boat following boat registration requirements\" width=\"563\" height=\"317\" data-original-set=\"https:\/\/www.boatsmartexam.com\/knowledge-base\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/04\/BoatRegistrationSplash11-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.boatsmartexam.com\/knowledge-base\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/04\/BoatRegistrationSplash11.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 563px) 100vw, 563px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>Boat Registration Exemptions:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Human-powered craft.<\/li>\n<li>Boats that are properly registered in another state that are using North Dakota waters for less than 90 consecutive days.<\/li>\n<li>Boats documented by the U.S. Coast Guard.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Certificate of Number may be obtained by submitting an application and fee to the North Dakota Game and Fish Department. It is valid for 3 years and expires on December 31st of the 3rd year.<\/p>\n<p>Boat owners are required to notify the Game and Fish Department within 15 days if any of the following occur:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>There is a change of address.<\/li>\n<li>There is a change of boat ownership.<\/li>\n<li>The boat is destroyed or abandoned.<\/li>\n<li>The boat is stolen or recovered.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Note: A Certificate of Number is not transferable. Anyone purchasing a boat must register the boat in their name even if the boat is already registered by the previous owner.<\/p>\n<p>If the Certificate of Number is lost or destroyed, you must apply to the North Dakota Game and Fish Department and pay a fee in order to obtain a replacement.<\/p>\n<h2>Boat Registration Number and Decal Placement:<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>The numbers must be applied as a decal, painted or permanently affixed to each side of the boat\u2019s bow (boat owners are not permitted to display any other numbers in this area).<\/li>\n<li>The registration number must be in bold block letters that are at least 3 inches high and in a color that contrasts with the color of the boat.<\/li>\n<li>The numbers must be separated from the letters by a hyphen or by a space equivalent in width to a letter or number.<\/li>\n<li>The numbers must be read from left to right.<\/li>\n<li>The numbers must be visible from at least 100 feet away.<\/li>\n<li>Validation decals must be affixed on both sides of the boat, placed within 6 inches of the registration number and to the rear of the boat.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>North Dakota&#8217;s Boat Registration Fees:<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Motorized boats under 16 feet in length: $12.<\/li>\n<li>Canoes powered by a motor (regardless of length): $12.<\/li>\n<li>Motorized boats 16-20 feet in length: $24.<\/li>\n<li>Motorized boats 20 feet in length or over: $33.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"author":4,"featured_media":0,"menu_order":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","template":"","format":"standard","article-category":[7],"article-tag":[32,247,255],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v14.2 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/wordpress\/plugins\/seo\/ -->\n<title>Requirements for Boat Registration in North Dakota<\/title>\n<meta name=\"description\" content=\"Learn about boat registration in north Dakota.
