You should always use a Pre-Departure Checklist to ensure that your boat has the right safety equipment onboard. Pre-Departure Checklist here!<\/a><\/p>\n<p>To prevent being in an emergency situation, operators are responsible for ensuring they have the boating experience and skill level for the planned trip BEFORE leaving the dock.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Instructing your Passengers<\/h2>\n<p>As the boat operator, it is important to talk to your passengers before leaving the dock. Use your pre-departure checklist as a discussion prompt to familiarize passengers with the following procedures:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>How to operate the craft in case of emergency<\/li>\n<li>The location of the craft\u2019s emergency kit<\/li>\n<li>How to rescue a <a title=\"Person Overboard Rescue Procedures\" href=\"\/article\/person-overboard\/\">person overboard<\/a><\/li>\n<li>How to properly use an <a title=\"Lifejackets and Personal Flotation Devices\" href=\"\/article\/lifejackets-pfds\/\">approved life jacket or PFD<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/03\/ScaledPreDepartureChecklistHero1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-246\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/03\/ScaledPreDepartureChecklistHero1-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"Family of boaters discussing their pre-departure checklist\" width=\"700\" height=\"394\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>As the operator, you are responsible for instructing your passengers to:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Always wear an approved life jacket or PFD<\/li>\n<li>Be aware that <a title=\"Effects of being on the Water\" href=\"\/article\/safety-while-your-boat-is-underway\/\">the effects of sunlight, motion, waves, wind and sound<\/a> can impair their judgment<\/li>\n<li>Keep close to the centerline of the boat and as low as possible when moving around the boat<\/li>\n<li>Keep hands and feet inside the craft when departing or returning to the\u00a0dock<\/li>\n<li><a title=\"Boating and Alcohol\" href=\"\/article\/alcohol-and-boating\/\">Refrain from consuming alcohol<\/a> while onboard<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Several boating safety organizations, including the <a title=\"Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary\" href=\"http:\/\/ccga-gcac.ca\/\">Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary<\/a>, offer free courtesy checks for pleasure craft to help operators ensure they have the proper safety equipment onboard.
