However, this experience can be quickly ruined if your paddle craft or small motorboat is swamped by the wake of another boat. You must practice situational awareness and be aware of the effect of your wake on smaller boats.<\/p>\n<h2>Hazards for Small Boats<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/fast.wistia.net\/embed\/iframe\/e6r11rr7lj?dnt=1&#038;popover=true\" class=\"wistia-popover[height=393,playerColor=7b796a,width=699]\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/embed-ssl.wistia.com\/deliveries\/c889681a1d0f76d9531d04cf912c9fef1cc1b608.jpg?image_play_button=true&#038;image_play_button_color=7b796ae0&#038;image_crop_resized=600x338\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><script charset=\"ISO-8859-1\" src=\"\/\/fast.wistia.com\/assets\/external\/popover-v1.js\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Unlike most larger boats, small boats and paddle craft are able to access smaller waterways. This means that in addition to open water hazards of larger waterways, operators of smaller boats must also be aware of the unique hazards they may encounter in smaller waterways, including:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Strainers:<\/strong> A \u2018strainer\u2019 is an obstacle that\u2019s formed out of rocks, fallen trees and other types of debris that end up in rivers. The water will flow through a strainer, but it will stop or \u2018strain\u2019 your small boat and keep it from moving forward.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Low head dams:<\/strong> These structures are sometimes called \u2018death machines\u2019 because they\u2019re capable of trapping a person under the water with the force of the hydraulic or \u2018backwash\u2019 current they produce. Always go around low head dam areas\u2014head to shore and carry your boat well past the dangerous area.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Unusually high water conditions: <\/strong>After periods of heavy rainfall or during unusually high water conditions, the hydraulic or \u2018backwash\u2019 current problems of low head dams become even more dangerous, because the current can reach even further downstream.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Strong currents and rapids:<\/strong> If you encounter strong currents or rapids, you should immediately head to shore or turn back to a safe water area. If you\u2019re in a paddle craft, you should head to shore and carry your boat well past the dangerous area.
