Check for rising or accumulating water in the hull.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 8)<\/strong> If the hull is undamaged, assess your\u00a0course\u00a0of action:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Is it possible to dislodge the craft from its obstruction?<\/li>\n<li>Is it necessary to lighten the craft by removing equipment and passengers?<\/li>\n<li>Is it possible that passengers may be able to carefully push the craft off the obstruction?<\/li>\n<li>Is it possible to use the reverse thrust of the engine to free the craft from the obstruction (without revving the engine)?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Step 9)<\/strong> If necessary, signal your need for help using a recognized distress signal.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/03\/IfYourCraftHasRunAgroundHeroScaled1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-323\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/03\/IfYourCraftHasRunAgroundHeroScaled1-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"Boat that has run aground\" width=\"700\" height=\"394\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Safe Boating Tip: <\/strong>Your first reaction when running aground might be to rev the engine in reverse in an effort to dislodge your craft\u2013this is the one thing you should not do. You could damage your boat\u2019s rudder or propeller. You might also suck sand or mud into your engine\u2019s cooling system. Always consult a marine chart for the area in which you\u2019ll be operating. Being aware of the water depth and the draft that your boat requires will ensure you can avoid running aground and damaging your propeller.<\/p>\n<p>Keep in mind that running around can be a scary situation, especially if your boat is taking on water.
