{"id":976,"date":"2015-05-07T09:16:21","date_gmt":"2015-05-07T13:16:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.boatsmartexam.com\/?post_type=article&#038;p=328"},"modified":"2020-02-14T16:05:09","modified_gmt":"2020-02-14T16:05:09","slug":"collisions-and-abandoning-ship","status":"publish","type":"article","link":"https:\/\/www.boatsmartexam.com\/knowledge-base\/article\/collisions-and-abandoning-ship\/","title":{"rendered":"Collisions and Abandoning Ship"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Collisions<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/fast.wistia.net\/embed\/iframe\/q4j6alo3cv?dnt=1&#038;popover=true\" class=\"wistia-popover[height=393,playerColor=7b796a,width=699]\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-original=\"https:\/\/embed-ssl.wistia.com\/deliveries\/dc6e571188ae1e325c1c9aa6721449d2fea7b5ed.jpg?image_play_button=true&#038;image_play_button_color=7b796ae0&#038;image_crop_resized=600x338\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><script charset=\"ISO-8859-1\" src=\"\/\/fast.wistia.com\/assets\/external\/popover-v1.js\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><strong>If your boat has been involved in a collision, perform the following:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Step 1) Ensure that everyone is wearing a <a title=\"Lifejackets and Personal Flotation Devices\" href=\"\/article\/lifejackets-pfds\/\">life<\/a>\u00a0<a title=\"Lifejackets and Personal Flotation Devices\" href=\"\/article\/lifejackets-pfds\/\">jacket or PFD<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Step 2) Visually and\/or verbally confirm that all passengers are present and accounted for.<\/p>\n<p>Step 3) Determine if there are other craft in the vicinity that may offer assistance.<\/p>\n<p>Step 4) Determine if there is any danger of being hit by another boat.<\/p>\n<p>Step 5) Inspect the hull and equipment for any damage\u2013check for <a title=\"Swamping or Sinking\" href=\"\/article\/swamping-or-sinking\/\">rising or accumulating water in the hull<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Step 6) If necessary, signal your need for assistance.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/03\/Collisions-01HeroScaled1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-329\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/03\/Collisions-01HeroScaled1-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"Busy waterways can cause collisions\" width=\"700\" height=\"394\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Reporting a Collision<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/fast.wistia.net\/embed\/iframe\/dvc7df1hkh?dnt=1&#038;popover=true\" class=\"wistia-popover[height=393,playerColor=7b796a,width=699]\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/embed-ssl.wistia.com\/deliveries\/a753be20132ddf284ee68947e40fec440585e7ed.jpg?image_play_button=true&#038;image_play_button_color=7b796ae0&#038;image_crop_resized=600x338\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><script charset=\"ISO-8859-1\" src=\"\/\/fast.wistia.com\/assets\/external\/popover-v1.js\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>You are required to take certain actions if you have been involved in a collision:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>You are required to stop and identify yourself, your vessel, your home port, and your ports of origin and destination to the other craft<\/li>\n<li>You are required to assist the crew of the other vessel if it is safe to do so<\/li>\n<li>If damage exceeding $1,000 has occurred, or the seaworthiness of either vessel has been compromised, you are required by law to file an accident report with the local authorities<\/li>\n<li>If serious injury or death has occurred, you are required by law to report the collision to the local law enforcement agency<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/03\/ReportingACollisionHeroScaled1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-330\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/03\/ReportingACollisionHeroScaled1-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"Boat operator reporting collision to local authorities\" width=\"700\" height=\"394\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Abandoning Ship<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/fast.wistia.net\/embed\/iframe\/7svvoqb529?dnt=1&#038;popover=true\" class=\"wistia-popover[height=393,playerColor=7b796a,width=699]\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/embed-ssl.wistia.com\/deliveries\/130debb86b3e21a158fe8fa2728b97dd82d75411.jpg?image_play_button=true&#038;image_play_button_color=7b796ae0&#038;image_crop_resized=600x338\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><script charset=\"ISO-8859-1\" src=\"\/\/fast.wistia.com\/assets\/external\/popover-v1.js\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>If circumstances (such as an onboard fire) indicate that you and your passengers need to abandon ship, perform the following:<\/p>\n<p>Step 1) Ensure that you and your passengers are wearing a <a title=\"Lifejackets and Personal Flotation Devices\" href=\"\/article\/lifejackets-pfds\/\">life jacket or PFD<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Step 2) If time permits signal your need for assistance with a radio,\u00a0flare, horn or <a title=\"BOATsmart!
