New Mexico’s Boating License Requirements

New Mexico’s boater education requirements stipulate that any boat operator born on or after January 1st, 1989, is required to successfully complete an approved Boater Education Course or proctored exam, and obtain a boating license, commonly called a boater education card, before they can legally operate a motorized boat.

New Mexico’s Boater Education Exemptions:

  • Boat operators who already possesses a valid Coast Guard-issued license.
  • Boat operators who are renting a motorized boat for 30 days or less, and have received a summary of boating laws and safe boating instruction from the rental company.

Note: Operators who are required to obtain a Boater Education Card (commonly called a boating license) must carry their card on board during boat operation.

New Mexico’s Age and Horsepower Restrictions

It is illegal for any person under the age of 13 to operate a motorized boat, a sailboat, or a personal watercraft (PWC), unless they have obtained and are carrying their Boating License on the boat and are being directly supervised by an adult who is accompanying them on the boat.
