Rhode Island’s Waste Disposal  Laws

Discharge of sewage

It is illegal to discharge any sewage from a boat into the waters of the state unless discharged via a marine toilet which is either a Marine Sanitation Device (MSD)-Type I, or a MSD-Type II, and it must be in proper working condition.

No Discharge Zones

It is illegal to discharge any sewage from a boat into Rhode Island’s waterways. Boaters must understand that EVERY waterway in the state of Rhode Island is considered to be a “No Discharge Zone”. Additionally, it is illegal to moor a boat on Rhode Island waterways if it is equipped with a marine toilet which is not properly sealed to prevent the discharge of sewage into the water.

Marine Sanitation Devices

It is illegal to operate or moor a boat which is equipped with a MSD which is not a type approved pursuant to the Clean Water Act, and that is not in proper working condition.
